Philosophy of Education

The goal of our educational system in the United States is to help people become productive Americans who have integrity and embrace such good values as loyalty, faithfulness, perseverance, confidence, honesty, and respect for others.  To help people become productive, the development of thinking skills is essential.  A great instructor understands that learning is a natural process.  Excellent instructors act as facilitators of this natural process.  Asking students questions—especially “why” and “how” questions—rather than always relying on a lecture format is an outstanding method of facilitating the natural process of learning. Good instructors engage their students in the content material.  I prefer to engage my students in the content material by relating the content to real life applications.  Being educated is more than simply knowing many facts.  Being educated is about not only knowing many facts but also being able to apply what one knows.  An educated person can label, match, classify, comprehend, evaluate, synthesize, and much more.  To become educated, one cannot simply memorize various facts.  To become educated, one must actively construct meanings and insights by using inductive and deductive reasoning.  The instructor’s job is to lead the students into discovering how the textbook concepts relate to the world and to each student’s personal life.

Joy Bazin

Joy Bazin grew up on the Westbank of New Orleans.  She attended Pittman Elementary, Helen Cox Middle School, and John Ehret High School.  After high school, she attended Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge where she majored in American History, and minored in Psychology.  After working at an accounting firm for a few years, she attended Tulane University to get her degree in Education and majored in English. Retired from the public school system after 28 years, she has taught American History, Geography, Psychology, Louisiana History, English I, English II, English III, English IV, and Business English throughout her career.  She has traveled internationally with both students (Education First Tours) and adults (Go Ahead Tours) since 2011.   She will continue exploring the world because she believes experiencing different cultures is an excellent way to become more educated.

Philosophy of Education

My philosophy of education centers around teaching others how to become independent learners.  I believe that all people, who have desire and will, can learn anything they put their minds to.  Most students tend to want a teacher to teach them a skill, so they can pass a test or score satisfactory on a particular assignment by reproducing the skill.  Mastering a skill is awesome, but being able to apply the skill set to other topics is better because it increases confidence, becomes a building block for learning a variety of other concepts, and leads to the development of educational habits that will serve one throughout life.  As with any other habit, though, we perfect these learning habits through practice.  The ultimate goal is to be able to adapt these habits to new, learning situations.  I believe in teaching the basics and building upon the basic concepts to achieve a new level of learning acquisition.

Other Instructors

Jacqueline Savorgnan - Spanish

Jackie grew up in South America.  Her father was a chemical engineer who was transferred overseas before she was even born.  She spent the first 18 years of her life moving between Mexico, Venezuela, Ecuador and Chile.  She attended international schools and lived immersed in the language and culture of these various countries and is fluent in Spanish.  After graduating high school from the Colegio Internacional de Caracas in Venezuela, she attended Loyola University in New Orleans, but she eventually moved to Florida where earned her degree in Spanish from the University of South Florida.  She then went on to earn her Master of Science in Education with a concentration in reading and literacy.  In 2005 hurricane Katrina had forced her to move with her family to Georgia, and in 2007 she began her teaching career. During her time in Georgia, she served as a Parent Liaison, an elementary ESL teacher, an elementary reading and math teacher and a parent instructional support coordinator, a PISC, where she taught parents in all subjects so that they could help their own children with schoolwork at home.  She also taught English to the parents of the ESL students at the school.  She is certified to teach K-6, English as a second language K-12, and Spanish K-12.  She moved back to Louisiana in 2014 and has been teaching Spanish since then.  Currently in her 17th year of teaching, Jackie is excited to share her love of the Hispanic language and culture beyond the walls of the classroom.

Philosophy of Education

My goal in teaching is to make learning attainable for every one of my students.  The science behind the learning process intrigues me.  I enjoy discovering what it takes for my students to thrive, I enjoy the challenge that comes with planning instruction in a certain way that will enhance the learning of all the different types of learners that I have. Using a student’s learning style to engage them in learning plays an important part in their success.  Providing students with a multitude of ways to let them show me what they have learned creates an atmosphere of genuine achievement and proves it does not always have to come in the form of a test.  I use many different teaching strategies to ensure my students experience those “aha” moments, and it is in those moments where I feel I have achieved my own level of success as an educator.
